DOCTORAL PROGRAM EDUCATION & GOVERNANCE​

The Institut Universitaire de Formation des Cadres (INUFOCAD) has been committed, since its creation in 2004, to the renewal of the country’s qualified human resources. It articulates its actions in order to accompany the Haitian youth on the path of development and progress. Such actions are illustrated in particular by the implementation of undergraduate and graduate programs.

The establishment of a postgraduate program to strengthen the interdisciplinary knowledge that many executives acquire in master’s degree is a necessity. For those with a master’s degree in the humanities and social sciences will be able, through the proposed university policy, to continue their training in order to enhance their academic credentials, with a view to being more operational and effective in the national and international marketplace. 

The actions that are taking shape at INUFOCAD will make it possible to respond to major challenges through the teaching offered in the different training structures, particularly that which constitutes the foundation defined in the doctoral program. This new program will be articulated around research lines that will be given according to what they could bring to the sustainable development of the country.

The doctoral program in education and governance, offered by INUFOCAD, aims to train researchers and practitioners capable of contributing to the advancement of knowledge in fields related to education and the governance of education systems from a perspective of cognitive justice and the decolonization of knowledge. At the end of their advanced multidisciplinary training, graduates will be able to meet the challenges related to the field of study of education systems and their governance. Graduates will have acquired knowledge and skills in intervention, analysis, and research on the side of analysis, planning, management and governance of education and scientific production. The student will be able to:

  1. Critically review published scientific results;
  2. Contribute to the advancement of knowledge in education and governance;
  3. Ensure the design of a research project under one of the program’s research lines and ;
  4. Effectively communicate the results of his/her research to a variety of audiences.

Length of the program: 3 years (+ one additional year if applicable)

Number of credits: 90 cr.

Type: Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.)

Modality: with thesis presented as an oral presentation

The doctoral student’s dissertation proposal must be related to one of the following lines of research

Doctoral program requirements include:

  • 3-year doctoral coursework
  • Doctoral colloquium on a semester basis
  • Laboratory activities
  • Comprehensive exam
  • Doctoral internship in a European, American, or African partner university
  • Approval of the ethics institutional board
  • Completing dissertation and oral defense of the dissertation.

Format: Core courses and seminars over 6 sessions (hybrid format)

Particularity: Comprehensive exam and dissertation can be done at a distance

Career: This program leads to a variety of positions:

  • University researcher and professor
  • Research advisor
  • Executive in the public or non-public sector
  • Consultant
  • Manager of an institution in the education sector, etc.

To facilitate comparison with the program in other countries, the program is made up of 90 university credits. One credit corresponds to approximately 45 hours of work, including all types of tasks (meetings, reading, writing, exchanges, etc.). To pursue these activities, a student must be registered for 30 credits per year, at a cost of US$ 100 per credit. The PhD is thus composed of:

  • 27 credits of core courses
  • 3 credits of optional courses (electives)
  • 60 credits for the dissertation, including the comprehensive exam, doctoral residency, Institutional Ethical Research Board Approval, dissertation proposal, research tools, and the defense of the dissertation in oral argument.

To be admitted to the program, the applicant must submit a dossier containing:

  1. Application form
  2. Bachelor’s and master’s degree and transcripts
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  4. Letters (3) of recommendation
  5. Preliminary draft of dissertation proposal (between 10 and 15 pages) including the title, the problem to be explored, the research question, the objectives pursued, the importance of the study and some documentary references.
